Pre Purchase Inspection, Large pergola, Should you be worried?

Pergolas are commonly found as additions to homes but do you know if they are legal? Do you know if they are safe? What are the potential consequences?

The answer is simple. If there is no record of building permit and final inspection, safety cannot be guaranteed. Building expert will know from workmanship and details if the construction is professionally executed or if it is a “home job”. There will be missing members, poor connections, inappropriate use of materials and poor workmanship.

If the pergola is constructed without building permit you run the risk of getting a building notice from the council with show cause why it should not be demolished.

Councils will use aerial photography to look for illegal building works

It will then cost you thousands to legalise it or you may have to demolish.

Building expert will be able to advise you what you are facing
